Chapter 355 - 271: A Sly Rabbit Has Three Burrows
Chapter 355 - 271: A Sly Rabbit Has Three Burrows
"Captain, it’s been half an hour. Why haven’t the reinforcements arrived yet?"
"Yeah, this mutant vine is already three stories tall, but there’s still no sign of them..."
"Captain, why don’t you give them another call and rush them? If the reinforcements don’t get here soon, the four of us can’t keep this constantly growing mutant vine in check by ourselves."
The three lightly injured Investigators all looked at Wang Jing and spoke up.
Wang Jing nodded. She was just about to pull her phone from her pocket to call her superior and ask why the reinforcements still hadn’t arrived after half an hour.
But just as she pulled out her phone, a languid voice drifted down from the roof of a four-story building nearby.
"Sorry to keep you all waiting... I was at a barbecue stall, and I’d just ordered. It would’ve been a waste to leave halfway through, so I finished the rest before rushing over. That’s why I’m a little late."
Wang Jing and her team looked toward the source of the voice and saw a young man in casual clothes, about 1.75 meters tall and nearly thirty years old. Upon hearing his explanation, all four of them were left speechless.
But then they remembered his usual unreliable nature and felt a sense of resignation.
"Liu Yang, now that you’re here, just get on with it. No more messing around..." Wang Jing said to her languid colleague.
"Alright, I’ll take care of this mutant vine right away..." Liu Yang knew he couldn’t really justify being late because of a barbecue. He nodded, then leaped from the roof of the four-story building.
After landing, he started walking toward the towering mutant vine in the distance.
The previously motionless, ever-growing mutant vine sensed a living creature approaching.
It immediately sprang into action, whipping its dozens of thick, sharp-barbed vines at the approaching creature in a swift attack.
WHOOSH, WHOOSH, WHOOSH...
The mutant vine, now three stories tall, whipped nearly sixty of its thick, barbed tendrils through the air, a sight that seemed to blot out the sky. Any normal person facing such a terrifying assault would likely just close their eyes in despair and wait for death.
When Wang Jing and her team saw the mutant vine attack their colleague, not a hint of panic showed on their faces. Instead, they watched with complete composure.
"You’re a feisty one, aren’t you!" Liu Yang quipped in the face of the overwhelming assault of barbed vines. Then, with a flicker of his body, he vanished on the spot.
BOOM.
Dozens of barbed vines struck the spot where Liu Yang had disappeared, shattering the hard concrete pavement. If an ordinary person had taken that hit, they would have been turned into a bloody pulp on the spot.
Just as the dozens of vicious vines prepared to chase after the evasive Liu Yang, he had already materialized before the plant’s main body.
"You’ve been making a ruckus for long enough. It’s time for this to end..." the still-languid Liu Yang said faintly. Then, an incredibly powerful Spiritual Energy Wave erupted from him.
Tier Two Peak.
This young man, no older than thirty, was actually a Peak Tier Two Cultivator.
A pale golden Spiritual Light materialized around Liu Yang’s right hand. Before the dozens of barbed vines could strike again, he had already pressed that glowing hand against the mutant vine’s main body.
"Extinguish."
As Liu Yang uttered the low command, the word barely out of his mouth, the wildly thrashing mutant vine instantly froze. Then, its entire verdant body began to visibly and rapidly wither.
In less than ten seconds, all traces of life vanished from the mutant vine, a creature whose rapid regeneration had been such a headache. Its massive, withered body came crashing down.
CRASH...
The collapse of the three-story-tall mutant vine kicked up a cloud of dust that took a long time to settle.
CLAP, CLAP.
Liu Yang dusted off his hands, turned to Wang Jing and her team, and said, "All done. I’m good to go now, right?"
"Yes, you’re free to go," Wang Jing said, glancing at the withered vine before turning back to Liu Yang.
"Oh, right. Did that intel guy from the Canglan Society escape?" Liu Yang asked before leaving.
...
An awkward silence fell over Wang Jing and her team at his question.
Their mission to capture the Canglan Society’s intelligence agent tonight had been a failure. That was an undeniable fact.
Liu Yang took one look at the expressions on their faces and knew the answer.
Unreliable as he was, even he knew not to press the issue. He just chuckled and quickly walked away.
After Liu Yang left, Wang Jing and her team contacted the police to handle the cleanup. Then, they took their heavily injured teammate back to the Superpower Administration Bureau.
...
As an elite member of the Canglan Society’s intelligence division, the flat-headed man knew that having multiple escape routes was basic procedure—a sly rabbit has three warrens, after all.
After escaping the Investigators’ grasp, he hadn’t fled brazenly down streets covered in surveillance cameras. Instead, he’d found a blind spot, lifted a manhole cover, and made his escape through the sewers.
A cautious man by nature, the flat-headed man had planned for this long ago, back when he first moved into that Urban Village. He had already worked out an escape route in case the Investigators ever came knocking.
So when they actually showed up, his escape along the pre-planned route had gone off without a hitch.
CLANK.
On a remote road near the city’s outskirts, a place seldom traveled, a manhole cover suddenly shifted before being pushed aside.
"Damn it... If I ever find out who betrayed me, I’ll make them regret it."
The heavily injured flat-headed man climbed out of the sewer. He replaced the manhole cover, then staggered, nearly collapsing.
HUFF... He braced himself with his right hand on the ground, gasping for air. Every breath sent a sharp pain through his chest.
Intense pain flared from his injury. Thick beads of sweat broke out on his forehead and dripped onto the asphalt, spattering into tiny droplets.
Fortunately, this road near the outskirts was almost completely deserted after midnight.
On a busier street, a man crouched in the middle of the road, propped up on one hand, would have been spotted by a passing car in moments.
HUFF... After resting for a moment and catching his breath, the flat-headed man regained a sliver of strength. He pushed himself up and hurried toward a small wooden cabin in a field off in the distance.
This old wooden cabin was a safe house the flat-headed man had prepared in the city, a secure place to recover in case of emergency.
CREAK.
He pushed open the cabin door. The room inside was pitch-black. There was a light, but out of caution, the flat-headed man didn’t turn it on.
He pulled out his phone and switched on its flashlight. Guided by the dim beam, he moved slowly into the cabin.
In the back of the cabin, against the far wall, stood a wooden table. A small, black metal box sat on top of it.
He set his phone, flashlight still on, down on the table. The flat-headed man pulled over a chair, sat down, and opened the black metal box.
Inside the box lay white gauze and various medical supplies.
The black metal box on the table was, as it turned out, a first-aid kit he had prepared for himself.
HISS...
ARGH...
In the pitch-black cabin, the flat-headed man took out the medical supplies from the first-aid kit and began to treat his wounds.
After that, pained cries would occasionally echo through the dark cabin.
