Chapter 2474: Knocking for a Sound
Chapter 2474: Knocking for a Sound
Xu Huo and Bubble Bean turned their gaze to Ling Ling. Taking someone else’s things under their noses is not just a matter of a small conflict. However, Ling Ling frowned and said, "I didn’t take anything from that house, and I’ve explained this to you before. A player ambushed me, which is why I mistakenly intruded into your place. Everything was fine when I left yesterday. Now today, you’re saying something’s missing. Why don’t you check your own people first?"
The words were blunt, but the players and the middle-aged man who came did not get angry. The middle-aged man said, "If we hadn’t checked our own people first, we wouldn’t have come looking for you."
Ling Ling was indignant, "What? Just because your stuff is missing, I must have stolen it? Or do you want to call over the Law Enforcement Team?"
"The Law Enforcement Team can’t cover everything, and we have evidence that you did enter that room. Both the surveillance machines before and after can prove it. Besides you, everyone else who entered that room during that time frame has been verified, and it wasn’t them," said the middle-aged man.
"If you’re going to frame someone, at least make it believable," Ling Ling said. "It’s just a small craft piece. Isn’t it easy to hide? What exactly do you want? Just say it!"
The middle-aged man didn’t argue with her and took out a metal round box, placing it on the table. "Inside is a special type of honeybee. It can distinguish over a thousand kinds of scents and identify them accurately. If you’ve touched that Cat Whisker Fruit, the scent will be left on you."
"The bee is non-aggressive, so you can relax."
Ling Ling pressed her hand against the table, and an invisible force covered the box from a distance, denting its metal lid. She coldly smiled, "Why should I cooperate?"
The middle-aged man didn’t even look at the box. He leaned back and pointed to the six players beside him, "For them, is that good enough?"
"Seems like reasoning won’t work?" Ling Ling appeared somewhat agitated. Her thumb on the table kept digging into her fingernail.
"Amazing. When I first arrived, I thought District 001 was all about law and morality," Bubble Bean clapped, "Who knew it was still about who has the bigger fist."
This attitude indicated he was on Ling Ling’s side.
The middle-aged man glanced at the three of them, casually shifted his body, and then his gaze landed on Xu Huo’s face, "What does this gentleman have to say?"
Xu Huo knew he had a device hidden in his sleeve and smiled slightly, "Yesterday, my companion was accidentally lured onto your territory. How do we know you’re not baiting us? I heard District 001 often has players from the Outer Zone go missing. For this, the Law Enforcement Team even has specific support regulations... Isn’t this one of those cases?"
The middle-aged man’s expression didn’t change, "Let’s not confuse two separate issues. District 001 established the relevant laws to protect and attract more players from the Outer Zone to settle here. We’ve already sent someone to investigate that player this lady mentioned. If he frequently visits Cat Fruit Town, he will show up sooner or later."
"As for what you mentioned about baiting... I can invite someone from the Law Enforcement Team to witness. We certainly lost an item, and it’s not a baseless accusation. You can get a report receipt from the Law Enforcement Team."
He then ordered one of the players to handle the matter.
Having the conversation come to this point, not cooperating would seem a bit tactless.
Xu Huo gave a signal to Ling Ling, who stopped picking at her nail and made a "please" gesture.
"Forgive us." The middle-aged man opened the metal box. The bees inside weren’t dead. The little creatures, about the size of a finger, circled in the air twice, inspecting everyone but landing on no one. Finally, they returned to the box.
Seeing this, the middle-aged man’s expression darkened. He apologized again and left with his people.
"Looks like they got the wrong person." Bubble Bean said coolly.
"Where did you go yesterday?" Xu Huo asked Ling Ling.
Ling Ling briefly recounted the events. She encountered the ambusher when passing through the residential area of public workers in Cat Fruit Town. During their fight, she entered the home of an official with the surname Mi. Both she and the ambusher were surrounded, but the ambusher, not being a dungeon player, used tickets to escape, leaving her in a tough battle with restricted teleportation devices.
This was a completely unnecessary conflict, so she immediately chose to explain the situation.
The other family was reasonable and let her go after verifying her story, though they arranged for someone to tail her.
"So how did it become an accusation of theft?" Bubble Bean asked, "Did they not notice when reviewing the surveillance yesterday that you went into that room or that something was missing?"
Ling Ling shrugged, "I went through so many rooms at that time, and I was in the middle of a fight. With Cat Whisker Fruits everywhere, how would I know which one they’re missing?"
"In any case, I didn’t take anything from there."
"Isn’t that a coincidence?" Bubble Bean said, "They just happened to lose a Cat Whisker Fruit, which fits the instance’s requirement for passing. Should we retrieve that Cat Whisker Fruit?"
"The journey of the Cat Whisker Fruit", if we look at the process from lost to found, could be considered a ’journey’. Moreover, this matter doesn’t seem that simple. The player who ambushed you clearly targeted their attack on purpose. Leaving the residential area so quickly afterward seems like a deliberate attempt to lure Outer Zone players in."
"This feels more like baiting," Ling Ling said. "I’m afraid they just wanted to draw us over."
"The person who ambushed you probably targeted the official with the surname Mi," Xu Huo said. "What was lost might not even be the Cat Whisker Fruit."
"That does make sense." Bubble Bean snorted, "Such a tiny place, and they’re still plotting. The town isn’t even that big, and there are so many officials."
"Haven’t you read the records?" Xu Huo said, "Cat Fruit Town was once considered a place of remarkable talent long ago. Before the evolution started, a few people from here were influential on the national stage, leaving a rich heritage."
"That was almost two hundred years ago." Bubble Bean dismissed, "Are we going to unravel old accounts from two hundred years ago to clear this instance?"
"What I’m saying," Xu Huo continued, "is that while the current residents of Cat Fruit Town might not be directly involved in politics, their descendants, friends, or students might be. These people might contribute back to the town. Even if none hold significant positions, they inevitably become part of political struggles."
Bubble Bean fell silent for a second, "This doesn’t have much to do with our instance."
He couldn’t imagine how political struggles would manifest in a single Cat Whisker Fruit.
"Indeed, it’s been too long," Xu Huo leisurely sipped tea, "Moreover, Cat Fruit Town hasn’t developed that well. It’s like the legacy of the ancestors didn’t extend far enough. We can skip it."
Bubble Bean coldly glanced at him, stood up, and left the restaurant.
Once Ling Ling and the others had left, she asked Xu Huo, "Do you two have some history?"
"No." Xu Huo put down his teacup.
"Then why did you toy with him?" Ling Ling was surprised, "I thought you teamed up because you were friends."
"Not at all. I’ve just been bored recently. When I see a mind whirling like a half-full bottle, I want to give it a tap," Xu Huo grinned, "Just to hear the sound."
